Planning your quilt sandwich? Use this calculator to estimate backing fabric and batting size based on your quilt top dimensions, desired overage, material width, and seam direction.
Whether you call it batting or wadding, this calculator handles the math in imperial or metric measurements so you can get back to quilting.
To use this calculator, enter your quilt top width and length, then add the amount of extra overage you want on each side. The calculator uses those measurements to work out the total backing or batting size needed.
Next, enter your material width. For backing, this is usually your fabric width. For batting or wadding, it is the usable width of the batting.
If your backing or batting is not wide enough in one piece, the calculator will estimate how many panels or pieces are needed. You can also choose your preferred seam direction to see how the layout affects the result.
The calculator then provides:
* Required backing/batting width
* Required backing/batting length
* Number of panels or pieces needed
* Estimated yardage or meterage required
* Fabric to buy, rounded up for convenience
Whether you use imperial or metric, the calculator does the maths for you so you can move on to the fun part — quilting.
